Mississaugans step up at music festival

June 10, 2008 01:25 PM - Mississauga will be well-represented at the 2008 edition of North by Northeast (NXNE).

The festival, which runsThursday to Sunday and features more than 500 artists performing at 40 bars, clubs and other venues in Toronto, includes a slew of local musicians. A few familiar faces will grace the festival once again, but there's also a few artists making their first appearance. The folksy sounds of Meadowvale's Andre Charles Theriault can be heard on Thursday when he performs at Sneaky Dee's. He hits the stage at 9 p.m. Theriault released the album, Andre Charles Theriault Sings the Songs of Andre Charles Theriault, earlier this year through the We Are Busy Bodies label. Mississauga-bred vocalist Basia Lyjak is back at the festival, performing Friday at the Hard Rock Cafe. She hits the stage at 11 p.m. Earlier this year, Lyjak released the single, Don't Talk! Several tracks off Lyjak's second album, Writings On The Wall, including Plastic, Stuttering, Bye Bye, Torn and Lies, can be heard by visiting www.myspace.com/basialyjak.

Applewood ska-punk band Keepin' 6 will have a long day on Thursday. In the afternoon, the band plays a free concert at Sunrise Records on Yonge St. and will then perform a midnight set at the Annex Wreck Room, as part of NXNE.
The performances coincide with the band's completion of its debut video, LT (Stop Tellin' Me Lies). Several tracks off the band's latest album, Uncensored, are available for preview at www.myspace.com/keepin6. Clarkson band illScarlett, which was nominated for a 2008 Juno Award in the New Group of the Year category, performs at the Sound Academy (formerly The Docks) on Friday. Show time is 9 p.m.

The Meligrove Band rocks the Reverb on Friday at midnight. The band recently finished touring the United States with Tokyo Police Club. To hear selections from the quartet's three albums, Planets Conspire, Let It Grow and Stars & Guitars, visit www.meligroveband.com.

Heavy music act Scarlet Sins, featuring Mississauga bassist Tanya Nicklaus, performs at the Funhaus on Saturday. The band hits the stage at 11 p.m. The band has several tracks available for preview, including Drown, With You, Backstabber and Let Go. Visit www.myspace.com/scarletsins.
Matthew Barber, who released the album, Ghost Notes, earlier this year, appears at the Rivoli on Saturday, starting at 10 p.m.

The Hidden Cameras will also perform, being joined by Rough Trade and Ember Swift on Thursday at the Phoenix. The band is fronted by ex-Meadowvale vocalist Joel Gibb.
